have endured an anxiety disorder for six years and have found the only medication that is effective was diazapam. This however was prescibed on a short term basis. Is there a non addictive longer termed medication with similar effects.

Hello Kelly

Altough Diazepam is a ''quick Fix'' you wont find a similar medication without the addictive dangers, all benzodiazépine are addictive.

What you may want to do is dicover ways of coping with anxiety in concert with pharmacotherapy.

Like a therapist or and a support group, there is nothing like having a circle of people who understands what you are going trough.

Thank you for your reply, it was very helpful. I have over the last few weeks consulted with a coucellor. I do find it quiet helpful, although for day to day activities I do rely on medication unfortunatley. I have been also recently prescribed buspirone. Do you have any feedback or information on this medication?

Helo Again

I'm glad I could be of help

Buspirone is prescribe for anxiety but its not a benzodiazepine so this is good news, it works on the neurotransmission and usualy prescribe on a short term basis, you should avoid alcool with this medication so Kelly your on the right path here, many of us have problems with taking medication but you should not be to hard on yourself because of it.

Fair Winds to you

hi there, i was first diagnosed with GAD generalisesd anxiety disoreder late last year but i had been having panic attacks throughout the year. my gp put me on an anxiety anti deoresant called arapax and epilem a mood stabaliser.... with in a month i was starting tooo feel good again

But i went off my meds 6 months later thinking that i could cope and i did for a few months the gp also had me on diaz which worked wonders untill i got addicted to the shit!!!!!! then i realised if i abused forte it done the same thing two years on now medicare hav caught me for dr shopin!!!! my doctor has now got me on a very very addictve drug called xanax but its slow release....it seems to work but i keep it for more of a sleeping pill of a night.

he also has me on a new anti anxiety/called cetalapram and also 200 mgs of serequel of a night it sounds bad coz its an anti phsycotic but wot it does is slow the thought process in your mind to stop all the racing thoughts going sround. if u sint a pill abuser xanax or serapax are the drugs to go but they r very very hard to obtain from a gp

they r schedual a drugs

its not just pills that r the solution u really have to talk things thru with people that u trust.

believer me the panic attacks are sooooo scary and ive lost a good 3 years of my life because of em.... good luck i hope my infor was helpful take care xxxx
