I agree w/another response indicating clonazepam (Klonopin) is a better choice than Xanax (alprazolam) for anxiety symptoms under certain conditions. Here's why: Xanax has a medium length half-life (8-12 hrs). It typically works for symptom relief from situational (or other short term) anxiety. If the person feels fine after the short term trigger has passed, Xanax might work well. However, Xanax dosage and timing must be carefully managed in someone with persistent, daily anxiety. When Xanax wears off, it tends to do so rather quickly. If a person doesn't take the next dose in a timely manner, the rapid decline in xanax effectiveness can lead to rebound anxiety. I call this "the Xanax rollercoaster." For those with persistent, daily anxiety, it may make more sense to take a med with similar symptom relief properties as Xanax, but has a longer half-life. Clonazepam (Klonopin) has an average half-life of 33 hrs which reduces the need for precise dosing and timing. It's a way to get off the "Xanax rollercoaster".
