Q: If THC effectively creates a block in the brain's ability to receive information, could SMALL, carefully measured doses of pot be used to treat O.C.D.and other Anxiety disorders?

According to Dr Jeffery M. Shwartz, in his book BRAINLOCK, O.C.D. is caused by the subject's inability to process intrusive thoughts, feelings and urges out of the brain due to the "overheating" of the putamen striatum. Would THC assist in the slowing down of these thoughts & urges by slowing the brain's overall activity or could it have the opposite effect and force the brain activity to stay even more "Locked in "? Many theories about O.C.D. also hold that it has at it's base Past emotional trauma; If this is true ( even if it is only true on a case by case basis ) could Marijuana have a positive, albeit temporary sedating effect on the brain that would make it a viable option for people with O.C.D. and related anxiety disorders? Thank you for your time.

Thank you for your question and welcome to AnxietyConnection.com.

I am not a medical professional and would not be able to answer your question as to whether marijuana would work for treating anxiety.

I did ask a question on the site a few weeks ago related to this subject. There was also an article on CNN about using marijuana to treat PTSD.

You are not the only one asking this question. I imagine we will hear more about it in the coming years as more research is completed.

Hello there

Well this certainly is an interesting question.  Are you an anxiety sufferer yourself or are you doing some type of scholarly paper on this topic?

The use of medical marijuana has been advocated for many different medical and mental issues including anything from autism to Multiple Sclerosis.

I am not a medical doctor so I can't give you a doctor's perspective on this.  I am sure each doctor has their own viewpoints.

In the meantime here is an article from Elle magazine about Marijuana and anxiety.

In researching this...it really is a mixed bag...excuse the pun...of some people saying that this substance could help with anxiety and some say it exacerbates anxiety and panic attacks.

Certainly this topic is worthy of more research.

Tell us more of your thoughts and opinions...we are eager to hear them.

I thank you both for your replies and the links they carried were good.Smile

Actually, my concern is for someone who is very close to me who has used just about every Drug Du Jour for O.C.D. over a decade's length of time and swears
that not a single one of them treat his symptoms but that ALL of them have given him sexual side effects.
