Q: I cant sleep or eat. My mouth and tongue are raw from being bitten so much by myself, mainly at night time when im trying to sleep. Been like this for months. What could the doctor perscribe to me?

I've had depression issues all my life but never really did anything about it. Its gotten worse over the years and it's driving me crazy. I've looked up many cures and tried different things. Nothing seems to work. Can a doctor perscribe me to a drug thatll ease my mind and reduce my anxiety?

Kaylynn,

Since I am not a medical person I would tell you to seek help from your physician about medications.   I know there are many different medications on the market for depression, and with the help of your doctor you should try to find the one that works best for you.

I went through a period of depression when I was going through menopause.  With the help of my doctor I found the right medication, and boy, it made all the difference!  So, speak to your own doctor, tell him exactly what is happening, and he will be able to help you take the next step and find what is right for you.

Let us know how you are doing, and don't hesitate to ask us any more questions.

Best in health,

Cathy

Hi there

Are you doing this biting while you are asleep or when you are awake?  I am wondering if this problem may be related to a teeth grinding problem.  Sometimes it can manifest in other ways...biting the inside of your cheek or tongue.

Are you taking any prescription medications?  Some meds can actually cause problems with the tongue.  Here is some information about tongue related medical problems.

Have you been to the dentist?  Could a dental problem be at the root of your symptoms.  Have you been to your general practitioner?  Have you had your thyroid checked?

I would rule out the medical reasons first.  But if this is due to anxiety...there are definitely things you can do.  A therapist can help you with this.  Does chewing gum or other chewy/crunchy things help? I suspect that if this is due to anxiety that medication could help.

Let us know what happens.  Thanks for reaching out here.
