Q: What about Provasin for nightmares from PTSD?

I was recently hospitalized for severe, chronic PTSD.

My doctor put me on provasin, along with Restoril.

She said the generic drug, provasin, is now being used 'off label' for PTSD nightmares.

It has helped me. Why is this med not used more often? Is it a new treatment?

Curious.

Hi Yellow Rose,

Provasin is a name brand for Mecamylamine which used to be prescribed for high blood pressure. It was discontinued as a high blood pressure medication because it caused hypotension. (low blood pressure) Only recently has it been prescribed for anxiety (including post traumatic stress disorders.) There is a good article here by Dr. Chris Ballas called "Teaching an Old Drug New Tricks" that gives more information about the drug and testing that lead to this drug being used for anxiety conditions.

I hope you find this helpful. While online resources are good sources for information to ask all the right questions of your doctor to manage your care, but it can not take the place of your doctor's sound medical advice.

Please stay in touch and let us know how you are doing!
