Q: Anyone currently or has previously used Prozac?

I've been taking Zoloft for OCD since I was a Junior in Highschool. During that time I was a competative swimmer and had intense work outs daily. Then in my Senior year, I stopped swimming and rapidly a lot of gained weight. I've since them gained almost 30 pounds and have been trying to loose the weight, but I just can't shake it. My doctor said that Zoloft can cause weight gain and that if I want, I can try a different medication. The next one she suggested is Prozac. So, does anyone have anything, ANYTHING at all to tell me about Prozac? Good and bad? Especially if you're someone currently or have previously used prozac. Please help me!

Thank you for your question and welcome to AnxietyConnection.com.

I am not a medical professional and would not be able to provide you with medical advice, however, everyone reacts differently to medication and it is impossible to say how a person is going to react to each medication. What may work for one person, may not work for another and vice versa.

My mother, now 83, has been on Prozac for about 5 years. She was diagnosed with Major Depression and Cognitive Disorder NOS. She would fall asleep in her armchair, shortly after waking and getting out of bed, in the morning. She would sleep there for hours with her tongue hanging fully out of her mouth. She would walk with a shuffle, slowly, and slumped forward. She would barely speak with anyone because she couldn't focus on the conversation- she wasn't "there". She didin't know "what" we were talking about.. "what" we were asking her. She could hardly butter her toast without making a conscious effort.. to move the knife acrosss the bread. She had trouble concentrating, filling out papers, doing math. She would rumble through her desk trying to find "something"....

I was grieving the loss of my mother while she was still alive.

But all has improved dramatically with Prozac.

It is like the light bulb was "switched" back on... my mother was back!!!

She is 83 and has some "minor" problems that go with being 83. But.. She is back to her gardening; buying plants and caring for them. She has gotten back into to art work and crafts. Her SOUL has returned. She was dead, and now is alive.

Yes I was on prozac and it was not for me!! It made me cry and have more anxiety and I was so tired and could not sleep it was like I drank 100 cups of coffee a day!! I was on it for 1 month!! Now I am on Zoloft it has been about 2 weeks and it seams to be better for me. People are different and it may work for you. I didnt like the prozac at all. Good luck!!

I can tell you that I had very rapid weight gain, and excessive crying. everyone is different, but it made my depression, and synesthsia worse.

Yes, I used it for 14 years for severe depression and it was the only thing that did work for me-I got my life back!! It quit then I used Effexor and cymbalta--now back on Prozac for 4 weeks-it does take time to get into your system to work-but it is worth the wait==side effects of nausea at times, but can handle that instead of the anxiety and depression-has low side effects for me-I do not feel over drugged on it either=may take 4-6 weeks for full benefit so stay with it and good luck to you!!! hi sandy,  thanks for your input about prozac . i'm taking wellburtin now as i've gained about 40 lbs now . from prozac & celexa . and they say that wellburtin doesn't make u gain weight . but, my probelm is i'm still eating alot haven't lost any weight yet .but i,m taking a drug for nerve pain called gabapentin 300 mg at bedtime . and it suppose to make u gain weight too .i don't want  to stop taking it if i need it . i'm getting depressed again from the weight i can't even stand for my husband to see me undressed . and i feel it's interfering with our sex life . he hasn't said anything about me being  unatractive to him but, i just feel that way . i'm 64 & everything is sagging i'm not used to this i could deal with it if i could atleast lose some weight . and don't feel like exercising sometimes i walk but, it's been too hot . silverfox46
