Q: out of thiamine

What should I do if I run out of my 100mg Thiamine pills? Will I develope Thiamine difficiancy? I've been taking them for about a month & a half, 2 a day, then my doctor told me to start taking only one a day and I'm feeling weird. But right now I'm in between checks and I only have 4 left, so I'm a little worried. I take them because I'm an alcoholic and I'm detoxing from Klonipin because that is what i tried to kill myself with by overdosing on them, so they took me off of them and I was taking them for a year.

Thanks for your question. This sounds like a question you should talk with your doctor about. Even if you are in between visits, you should be able to call your doctor and ask whether you will be okay. Siince todu say is Tuesday, your docto r should be able to advise you and stores should be open for you to be able to get more Thiamine if that is what the doctor recommends.

Sorry I could not be of more help, but since you are already being treated by a physician, it is important to speak with him about your care.

Hello Mark

We had talked about this before I believe.

I am not a doctor but...in researching for you before...I didn't see anything in the literature about withdrawals from Thiamine.  Have you asked your doctor for the reason behind taking you off this?  I think the more worried you become...the more you will think that you are experiencing some sort of reaction.  So I know it is hard but I would try to be calm.  It is a vitamin so...I really don't think you are going to suddenly develop a deficiency right away.

I would talk about your worries with your doctor who can hopefully ease your mind.

Hang in there and let us know how things go.  We will want to know how you are doing.

My doctor is the one who told me to worry about thiamine (vitamin b1) becuase my body is used to taking in 200mg of it a day. He also told me about what might happen if I stop taking it all the sudden. Berryberry can accur as well as heart failure and many other symptoms may follow. So you see I'm a little worried for when I run out and have no money for more.

Hey Mark

Well...there are food sources for this vitamin.  Please check out this website for foods rich in this vitamin.

I would ask the doctor again...why he is taking you off of this vitamin supplement.

Let us know how things go for you.
