Q: What is the best anxiety med for a bi-polar person when stress is greater than ativan?

I'm bi-polar.  Under more stress than I can possibly handle.  Need a med that works.  I take 1mg Ativan 2 times during the day and 2mg at night.  Even the nighttime dose isn't working.  My psychiatrist sucks and I usually do more of the research of what I need than he does.  (He's with the state, and that's all I can afford).  Also, part of the stress is that I'm trying to lose 50pounds, so a drug that increases appetite would not be a good choice.  What about Xanax or Cymbalta?  Valium or Luvox? (really not sure on the last two).  Help?

Gwen,

Thank you for your question and welcome to AnxietyConnection.com.

I am not a medical professional and would not be able to give you medical advice.

It is impossible to say which medication would be right for one person. Because people metabolize medication at different rates, what might work for one person may not work for someone else. Unfortunately, it is often a matter of trial and error to find the right medication and the right dosage.

I am sorry you are not happy with your psychiatrist. Is it possible for you to change or request a different doctor?
