Dear Nancy,

I am sorry to hear that your son is suffering from OCD. You and your son need more help than meds.  You can start right away with a good children's book such as Talking Back to OCD: The Program That Helps Kids and Teens Say "No Way" -- and Parents Say "Way to Go"  or Up and Down the Worry Hill: A Children's Book about Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and its Treatment.

Most likely you will need more help than a book can provide.  Cognitive Behavioral therapy can be highly effective for helping people with OCD. You'll want to find a therapist who specializes in this area. A good place to look is the Anxiety Disorders Association of America (ADAA) website.

I understand that you are uninsured, but you might be able to work out a fee agreement with a therapist that you can afford, get involved in a clinical research study, or see an unlicensed therapist who is under the supervision of an OCD specialist.

Please keep us updated.

Nancy,

OCD in children can be treated with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).  There is no solid research evidence that acupuncture is helpful in treating this problem.  I would suggest you contact www.adaa.org or www.abct.org to try to locate a therapist in your area that specializes in treating OCD in children with CBT.
