Q: What are the side effects of Zoloft?

I have been taking Zoloft for three years to treat anxiety and depression. I used to be a very anxious person and experienced many anxiety attacks.

Hi Ed,

You can read about Zoloft here in this overview. Zoloft is an antidepressant Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). There is a warning in this overview that I have pasted below. You should read the entire article, but here is what it says about SSRIs:

"SSRIs can cause agitation, nausea, and low sex drive. Over time, many SSRI-treated patients gain weight, although the degree of weight gain varies depending on the drug. (For example, paroxetine poses a greater risk for weight gain than citalopram.) Elderly people taking these drugs should take the lowest effective dose possible, and those with heart problems should be monitored closely.

There have been many concerns about SSRIs and increased risk for suicidal behavior. Both adults and children who are treated with SSRIs should be carefully monitored for any worsening of depressive symptoms or changes in behavior."

I hope this is helpful. Stay in touch and let us know how you are doing!
