Q: How dangerous can prozac be?

My doctor has prescribed one Salipax 20mg per week for treating a problem of premature ejaculation I have developed since a few years. Will this really help? What can be eventual health hazards?

Hi Dev,

Yes, some doctors prescribe Prozac to help with premature ejaculation, however, it is considered an "off label" use of the drug, which means that the FDA has not approved Prozac for this treatment.  That does not necessarily mean it is unsafe.

20 mg a week is not a lot of Prozac when you think about the fact that people taking it for depression are taking at least that much every single day.  But if you're concerned, there are certainly other things you can try, such as wearing a condom, masturbating an hour or two prior to intercourse just to name a few.

Well the answer to your prozac question: I was on it for a short while until i had gotten real paranoid. I wouldnt eat the food my parents gave me because i thought they were poisining me. But that is just me. I dont know how you will react to it. But anyway whatever you do DO NOT go off it cold turkey because that causes a really bad depression and its the worst feeling in the world.

Hi Dev:

I agree with Dr. Fee regarding it being an off label application, however, research is under way to determine the effectiveness of Prozac for premature ejaculation.

Prozac is one of the oldest antidepressants and therefore a tremendous amount is known about it.

Since it is an SSRI, one of the typical side effects is decreased sex drive. It is likely that you would know by now if you had this as a problem. Salipax is a name for fluoxetine that is produced outside the United States, and thus not under the supervision of the FDA for production. You can read more about Prozac here.

As far as paranoia, I wouldn't be concerned about this unless you are diagnosed with Depression with Psychotic Features, Bipolar Disorder (the old name was manic depression), Schizoaffective Disorder or Schizophrenia. Prozac will not cause severe mental illness symptoms if you are not already at risk.

If you are tolerating it well and are still concerned with the health hazzards, you should speak with your doctor.

Best of luck,

Dr. Diana Walcutt
