Q: 16 yr old on Elavil because of headaches

My son is 16 and has unexplained headaches.  They want to start him on Elavil @10mgs before they have any idea what's wrong.  Aren't there too many side effects!  He is a young boy who doesn't need sleepiness, erectile dysfunction, or suicidal thoughts.

Thank you for your question and welcome to AnxietyConnection.com.

I am not a medical professional and would not be able to provide you with any medical advice. However, if you are not satisfied with what your doctor has said, you may want to request a second opinion. You can contact your insurance company to find out whether a second opinion is covered under your plan.

If you do not feel comfortable asking about a second opinion, you have the right to question your doctor about his or her decisions and ask why he or she suggested a certain treatment.
