A reader asks Dr. Paul Donohue to explain what causes an ulcerative
colitis flare. Dr. Donohue responds that many colitis patients
experience cycles of flares (when symptoms act up) and remission
(when symptoms are not present), but what sets off a flare is
unknown, he says. Dr. Donohue also gives information on some of the
best ways to treat ulcerative colitis, including common medications
and surgical procedures that may help ease symptoms of the disease.
