People of Asian descent should get a genetic blood test before using medications that contain carbamazepine, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says. The test will determine if these patients are at risk for rare, but serious, skin reactions. Carbamazepine is the active ingredient in such meds as Carbatrol, Equetro, and Tegretol, which treat epilepsy, bipolar disorder, and neuropathic pain.
