How big are the needles and why do they go where they do?
The sterilized needles are less than one and a half inches long. Different conditions dictate different meridians, as each individual is unique. The philosophy suggests these points divide into yin and yang, helping or hindering the body’s activity. Balance is achieved by opening the pathways of Qi, stimulating the body to heal itself, and so treating the underlying problem rather than just the symptoms.
Does it always work?
Misdiagnosis is probably the biggest reason for not finding relief through acupuncture. It’s impossible to balance organs in treating an underlying disease if the diagnosis is wrong. Another variable factor being is the correct positioning of needles; it’s not anatomical so the point can slightly shift. If the wrong spot is used, no real benefit would be gained.
Prevention is the key.
One of the most important principles of acupuncture is prevention, using regular treatments to maintain optimal health. Balance and harmony keeps the immune system in great shape, protecting you from those lurking viruses, allergens or stress overload. In ancient China, patients paid a doctor for treatments when they were well, and received free treatment if they became ill.
