(New York Times) UPDATED 2008-11-21
University of Toronto researchers have found that people who are mildly neurotic are stressed by uncertainty even more than they are by bad news. For the study, investigators looked at the responses of 41 men and women, all of whom were given a test to find out their level of neurosis. The participants were then fitted with an electrode cap designed to measure their responses as they performed certain tasks. Researchers found that subjects who had scored higher on the neuroticism scale demonstrated more brain activity when they were given no feedback after performing a task than they did when they received negative feedback on the task. The scientists say their finding suggests that while no one likes bad news, for some people, no news is worse.
