Do I really have asthma?

By wandapete Wednesday, August 01, 2007

I was diagnosed with asthma following a severe case of pneumonia in 2006, but I wonder if that diagnosis is accurate.  I have shortness of breath; coughing all throughout the day and sometimes at night; sputum that ranges from clear to yellow; wheezing (mild to moderate); and, difficulty with general exertion.  I have no allergies and have no asthma attacks.   Most articles I have read reference allergies and asthma attacks

while my symptoms are daily (for the past year).  I have tried Advair and Albuterol inhalers, but I didn't have any relief.  I also tried a nebulizer with atrovent and xopenex, which was not that helpful.  I just started pulmonary rehab and I am hoping it will help give me more strength and endurance.  Please let me know if I am describing asthma.  Thanks!

Have you checked out our Symptoms section yet? You also might want to read over our Diagnosis section, which includes information about ruling out other disorders in diagnosing asthma.

Sounds like more than just asthma; perhaps pneumonia left some lung scarring, and perhaps on top of that airways have become somewhat reactive... needs Pulmonologist consult, pulmonary function tests, perhaps CT scan chest, other evaluatoins..  mn
