Anyone have cough induced asthma?

By dianeh830 Wednesday, April 18, 2007
I have cough induced asthma (I think that is what it's called) from a Bone marrow transplant.  I cough and cough and cough.  I notice it is worse with dust and cleaning and stuff.  Does anyone have any ideas for me?  I have to travel to Vietnam to get my baby.  I'm on Advair 500/50 and Singulair.
Thanks for any help,
Diane

Diane830,

I have had asthma my entire life and only within the past 3 years I started to have "Cough Induced Asthma", I would say every single day. My attacks can come on at any time but for the most part, as soon as I lay down to go to bed I start coughing and coughing and end up sucking on my inhailer about 4 or 5 times to get it to subside. On SEVERAL occasions I would wake up in the middle of the night and I simply could not breathe! No warning, no coughing, no wheezing, no nothin! My throat & neck were so constricted I was not sure if I was having an asthma attack or not, all I knew was I could not breathe at all and living alone, that was terrifying let me tell you!! I would pump my albuterol about 20 or 30 times non-stop trying to get my airways to open up which, I am very lucky because they eventually did. I went crying to my doctor and did not get an answer so I went to another doctor and I had the same problem. They looked at me as if I was over-reacting or something. I was terrifiyed! I had no idea if I would faint, how long does it take to faint when a person isn't getting air? 3 min.. 5 min.. should I call 911.. would they get there intime? Neither doctor had an answer for me. I do not know if you have had these SEVERE attacks yourself, but I can tell you it felt NOTHING like an regular asthma attack! My advice to you is to Please Please Please research every single medication you are taking for your asthma. I researched the medication I was taking and was horrifiyed to discover the attacks were actually caused by one of the medications. I could have seriously died. I nearly did. Died!! Dead!! I beg you to please research your medications side effects! I printed out all of the information I found on my medication, took it to my doctor and insisted that he take me off of it right away. I have not had one single severe attack since then and my "Coughing Induced Asthma" has nearly stopped as well. On a lighter note, I coughed so much that my Parrot, Philippe, coughs exactly like me!! He will sit there and cough and cough and cough and if you didn't know it was him you would think someone was dying!

I pray you find your solution and well health. If you or anyone would like to contact me, please do so at geckoshell@gmail.com

I am not sure of the rules so I did not name the medication I was on to be safe but am happy to tell anyone who is having the same types of problems.

Sincerely, Shelly

Wow, what a powerful message.  Thank you for the advice.  I have this type of asthma, too and it really helps to know that some side effects can cause attacks.  Thank you so much!!

It was wonderful reading about your story.  Thank you very much.  I had a bone marrow transplant and that's how I got the asthma.  I am on medications I must stay on due to liver problems and rejection.

Thanks,

Diane

My 8yr old son has somewhat of the same problem, it seems to flare up when it rains and when it starts getting cold.  He takes Singulair, (daily for the most part) I give him an Advair inhaler as needed, and occoasionally have to give him a breathing treatment(with Xopenex) when all else fails.  I feel so helpless when he is coughing and can't do anything to get it to stop.  He also has a stuffy nose during this time.  Please help with any suggestions?  thanks....Christy

my 3 year old daughter was diagnosed with cough induced asthma recently due to a chronic cough that at night would get much worse.  its possible that cough induced asthma can be triggered by allergens so you all may want to see an allergist as well.  we are going for an allergy test this week.  but the dr has her on allergy meds, nasonex, singular, albuterol and an inhaled steroid and the coughs have all but gone away... seriously better than they used to be.

I never had asthma when younger but about 10 years I developed a chronic dry cough. I have been worked up with the DX of cough variant asthma for which I now use an inhaled steroid that helps. I found something on the web attributing CVA to an underlying chronic infection but cannot find the article now. Does anyone have any info on CVA being caused by a bacterial infection? If, so, please e-mail me at mharp4@hotmail.com. Thanks. Tony P.

The last few days my allergies have kicked my asthma into overdrive.  At  home they become much better.  I run 4 air purifiers.  They have vacuumable reusable filters, and ionize the air.  With regular weekly maintenence, my Asthma is much better, that is until farmers burn their stubble, like it has been the last few days, then I just feel like I am going to die.

Also, a neti pot works wonders.  Not sure where you can get them, I ordered on online.  Once a week for sure, but daily if you like, use that pot with some warm salt water in it.  It washes the inside of the nose and cuts down even further on the effects of allergens, plus it breaks up congestion in the nose to let you expel it more efficiently.
