asthma and graves disease

By mammaw201 Friday, August 24, 2007

Does anyone have asthma and graves disease?  I have had asthma for about 25 years.  The last year my asthma was so out of control and then I became very ill and found out I have graves disease.  After being put on atd drugs to suppress my hyperthyroidism, my asthma has been almost non existent.  I can't believe it and neither can my doctor.  I am wonder now if my asthma problems was from the graves all along.

Any input from any of you.  I'm curious if anyone else has this disease and asthma.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for writing. Be sure to review the Causes of Adult Asthma section.

It mentions several factors that can trigger asthma. Have you reviewed the Medline Plus information about Graves Disease? Medline Plus has extensive information about Thyroid Diseases.

Thanks, I have read both sections.  I try to read as much information on graves and asthma both.  I was just curious if anyone else had both and what their experiences were.

You still can't convince my doc that my asthma was so out of control because of my graves disease, but yet my asthma is much better now that I am on the ani-thryroid meds.  Who can quess?

Hi,

I found your post while searching for info on this topic. I was diagnosed with asthma about 6 months before being diagnosed with Graves Disease. I am not yet in the normal range for my hyperthyroidism, so have not experienced any alleviation of the asthma symptoms. I feel that the two are related; I had never had asthma before I was diagnosed at 47 years old. I have also had allergy symptoms related to the accompanying thyroid eye disease, which began to develop soon after my hyperthyroidism diagnosis, and I have continued to experience these on and off for the year since then. I am hopeful that some of my symptoms, perhaps even the asthma, might abate when my hyperthyroidism starts coming into the normal range. Hope this was helpful. Your post certainly was.
