The Debate: Albuterol or Levalbuterol

By Rick Frea, Health Pro Monday, January 11, 2010
Albuterol and Levalbuterol are both bronchodilators, both can provide instant relief from an asthma attack, and can conveniently be carried in a pocket or purse for convenience. So which of these two great rescue medicines is best for you?Albuterol might just be the greatest gift ever to asthmatics. ...

I can only use Xoponex. Albuterol gives me side effects such as jitteriness, heart palpitations and sleeplessness. The cost of Xoponex is very high and getting higher. I pray for the day they come out with a generic. Also, insurance companies don't like to cover it.

I would image the patent for xopenex (levalbuterol) should be running out soon.  I know for a fact one of the makers of albuterol are ready to launch their own generic of levalbuterol.  I'm sure this will happen as soon as the xopenex patent runs out.  The price should start dropping once generics are on the market.  I don't know that levalbuterol is really any better than albuterol, yet I do see the day when levalbuterol replaces albuterol as the most popular asthma medicine.  Once the price of levalbuterol is comparable to albuterol, insurance companies will have no choice but to start paying for it, you'd think.
