Asthmatics Want Once-a-day Medicine

By Rick Frea, Health Pro Tuesday, January 18, 2011
A few years ago I asked Santa for a medicine I called One Puff. It's an asthma preventative medicine you take once in the morning and then you're done for the day. Needless to say, come Christmas 2010 this new asthma wonder medicine was not under my tree. It wasn't in my stocking either. Actually, ...

For years my asthma was uncontrolled, then my doctors introduced me to Advair 500/50, that was it. I used my ventolin rarely and I breathed like I had never breathed before.  Unfortunately, I moved back to my homeland of England and the Advair was not given to me because of the "cost"  I ended up steroid dependent, taking three different nebulizers four times per day, singulair, theophyllin and several other medications for, plus I developed avascuar necrosis from the steroids and had bilateral hip and bilateral shoulder replacement.  I now forget to take doses on a regular basis even though I have extremely bad asthma, but its just so much.  At one point I was nebulizing every 3 hours!!!.  Please give me the once per day medication and watch me become the most well controlled asthmatic on the planet.

Yes, that is one of the dissadvantages of new technology (and new medicine) is the cost.  Some insurance companies just aren't willing to flip the $120 that Advair costs.  Which seems backward to me.  One would think $120 a month to control asthma would be less than all the doctor and hospital bills while the asthmatic is off the medicine.

Well there is no once a day steroid - but there is coming very soon a once a day long acting beta agonist (24 hr)  - called indacaterol (Onbrez).  It is being marketed for the COPD crowd now but I am sure it will be perscribed for asthma as well.  Not sure if it has FDA approval in the US - though I recall reading it was going to happen in 2011.

Now if they find a once a day steroid - they can combine the two and your wish would be granted.
