Actually, being exposed, e.g., to dog and cat antigens very early in life, when our immune systems are immature, may make us tolerant to those antigens.
My mother was born and raised on a farm, and didn't have a single allergy -- except to penicillin -- whereas I was born (via C-section) and raised in a city -- and in a super-clean house -- and have had asthma (and allergies) almost as far back as I can remember.
