Your article, though well-intentioned, could be responsible for the death of some readers, as the "killing" effect of mold is caused by a "TOXIC" reaction, and not an allergic/asthmatic reaction. For anyone experiencing a "toxic" reaction, to take your implied advice [through the related experience of your friend] of simply "painting over" the mold, would keep the "toxic" mold reactor inside the still toxic [even after painting over] long enough to die. There are many online support groups for "Toxic" mold sufferers, that you, or anyone, can join, for free, to see if "toxic" reaction is making them sick, and not just an allergic/asthmatic reaction. Here is the link to one of the Yahoo groups: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/sickbuildings/
If you, or anyone, would like to learn more, please email me at josephsalowitz@yahoo.com - I am 68, and have had allergies and asthma since the age of 9, and "toxic mold reactivity" since the age of 55. Both asthma and "toxic mold reactivity" can be experienced concurrently, as in my case. This is not a criticism of all your hard work, but just a reminder to make you aware of an aspect of mold reactivity that you don't seem to be aware of.
I contracted Asthma in 1985. At the time I was living in an apartment where one wall in my bedroom kept getting black mold growing on it. At that time I didn't know about the harmfulness of black mold. I kept washing the wall. Even after moving out, I continued to have problems for many years. Now that my asthma is basically under control, my life has definitely improved. So I believe mold does cause Asthma.
