By Rick Frea, Health Pro Wednesday, October 22, 2008
See the accompanying comic strip!   Along with being an RT, I am also a recovering bronchodilatoraholic, and despite what I believed before I became an RT, I am not alone.   Bronchodilatoraholism is not necessarily bronchodilator abuse. However, bronchodilatoraholism can lead one to mak...

I have read with interest the story of the man who from an early age had become addicted to his inhaler. I have had asthma since the age of 1 year old (I am now 59), and just like 'Joe' was introduced to Alupent at 10 years old. When first introduced, it came in the form of a huge contraption, that you poured the alupent into the top, and then pressed a rubber bulb at the botton to release the vapours (I wish I wasn't that old!), moving swiftly on, I was about 15 when I had my first small inhaler, fantastic!. I carried it everywhere with me, and still do. It has sometime been my lifeline when, in my younger days my asthma was at it's worse, but I never abused it, and it never became an addiction, as with any drug you have to be sensible. I do still get my asthma from time to time, and from time to time, very rarly now, I use my alupent inhaler. I understand from my doctor that I can no longer get a replacement, and he, over the years has prescribed alternatives, but these are slow release drugs, whereas the alupent is instant. My inhalers are now very old and probably well past their sell by date, but I hang on to them, just in case! If any-one knows if you can in deed still get them on presciption I'd be pleased to hear from you.

Alupent is still on the market, and you can still get a prescription for it either in the Aerosol form or the inhaler form.  However, it is not prescribed too often any more because Albuterol and Levalbuterol are fast acting bronchodilators that are far safer than Alupent.  You should talk with your doctor about getting a new prescription, because those old ones may lose their potency in time.

I also would like you to know that I too had a nebulizer with a bulb to make the mist.  I got it back in 1985.  I never used it except just for kicks because I also had a regular nebulizer.   I wanted to keep it for historical purposes, but I accidentally threw it away when I moved to my new home.

I was born with asthma, i had inhalers all the time at 11 i started to take them fisrt 20 or so puffs a night but then more and more. i stole my dads inhalers and nearly killed him once. its so scary only my partner and a few friends know .

I kept taking untill i was 15 and then moved on to different drugs instead.

i used to take two a night sometimes. the doctor allways gave me more no questions.

i would hallucentate and i had a terrible trip and never used chemical hallucagenics again. but i still stuggle now im 25 with drinking.

This ruined my life, i coulnt tell a doctor as now i have kids and i will not allow them to be upset or have social on m back.

this is a real problem for kids leading to sustained drug and alchol abuse and needs to be adressed.
