    From my experience growing up what was once arguably the smoggiest place in the United States, the Pomona Valley in California, and being someone who swam in outdoor pools frequently in the summer, it's obvious to me what the connection with asthma is.  It's the combination of chlorine and smog.  Nothing has ever made my lungs hurt like swimming in a pool on a smoggy day in Upland, CA.
