Why don't they believe me?

By GinnyM Saturday, August 11, 2007

Three weeks ago I was cleaning out my basement which had a lot of mold in it which I didn't know at the time..I began having breathing problems. I've had asthma for over 10 yrs now but was always mild. I live in Michigan and the weather has been very hot and very humid...which hasn't helped matters at all.. I used my rescue inhaler but it continued to be a problem. Within days it just got worse. I was using my inhaler as much as I could. Finally I called my doctor, he was on vacation, they suggested I go to a local clinic as the doctor on call in the office was already booked full. So I went to the clinic. they also were booked but said they'd fit me in. After an hour of waiting (in air conditioning which seems to help a bit) I was seen by a doctor. With the initial exam of listening to my heart and lungs told me everything was good...but he did take an xray..from which he told me I had a swollen lymph node in my chest and a possible infection...he then went on to talk about luekiema, lymphoma etc. pneumonia and all things that would cause a swollen lymph node... at the time I was having lots of pain across my chest, it was tight and even my ribs hurt from trying to breathe. He told me it would take 5 days to get the results back from the radiologist and I should take alleve for the pains . That was it.. good bye... Bye This was on a Wed.. by fri. I was still in distress so I called my doctor's office again. This time a nurse talked to me and said she'd speak with the doctor on call and call me back. She called me back and said they would fax in prescriptions for me of a steroid to help the breathing and an antibiotic.. To take them over the weekend and she made me an appointment with my doctor for Mon.

Well to make  the story shorter, they never faxed in the  prescriptions so I waited and suffered all weekend. On Monday morning I saw my doctor and received the prescriptions and he said he would send for the xray results from the clinic...come back in a week, which my next appointment was 9 days later. At this time after having taken the medications I was a bit better but still having problems. The clinic verbally told my doctor that xrays were fine but did not send over the radiologists report. So my doctor ordered another xray be taken at the hospital this time. I am still waiting for any reports. I am now on azmacort inhaler, as well as taking Singular every day, I also use Spirevia every day and of course my ventolin inhaler as often as I need. Each place I went it was like they didn't believe I am having problems breathing.. it's like ok we'll try this or that.. but nothing to help quickly....at the clinic he said he  could give me a treatment but I wasn't wheezing..I rarely wheeze even at the worse times.. and he mentioned giving me a steroid but never gave me anything.. do these medical people not realize how scary and painful it is not to be able to take a good breath?

It's terrible all that you have had to go through. More than anyone, your doctors should understand your situation and take you seriously when you complain. It can be downright dangerous not to. Good luck and feel better.

I'm so sorry for your rotten experience.  Been there, done that.  More times than I care to count, since I've had asthma all my life.  But I recently switched to a pulmonary specialist, who not only listened, asked all the appropriate questions, but also did gazillions of tests (breathing and a blood allergy test) no one else has ever done.

We kept some meds, changed others, and although it was a really tiring day, for the first time in a long while I'm really hopeful.

Allergies & asthma too!

I am 53, have had allergies all of my life, asthma for most of my life.

We have water in our basement ( for up to 3 and 4 weeks at a time ) when there is excess rain.

Mold had developed under and behind all kinds of things. So far we have gotten an expensive air filter and an expensive dehumidifier.

And hopefully work is going to be done to keep the water out of or " under control " so the mold will not grow.

I was diagnosed with broncitus and an infect ( deep down near where your broncial tubes go into your lungs ).

With asthma & mold allergies you can have horrible tightness in your chest.

They are very real symtoms, you just have to complain enough for the to take you seriously!
