My First Post

By Sloane Miller, Health Guide Monday, September 24, 2007
Welcome to my blog about my life with both allergies and asthma.   I have a range of food allergies [tree nuts, salmon, nightshade veggies, some melons, tropical fruits too], food intolerances [gluten/wheat, diary, soy and processed sugar], environmental allergies [mold, trees, dust, etc.] an...

nice to "meet" you! I too have asthma; but I'm also a vegan, so I avoid a lot of the same foods that you have to, as well (except I get to eat the fruits & vegetables that you unfortunately must abstain from consuming). after reading just this one post, I know that I will continue to follow your blog posts :0)

hey veggie girl!

nice to meet you as well and thanks for stopping by!

question: do find maintaining a vegan diet helps with your asthma in any way? i'd be curious. i've found that eating very few processed foods seems to have helped lessen the possibility for food allergies for me.

Hi Sloane!

Not only has maintaining a vegan diet helped alleviate my asthma symptoms (I only need an inhaler every-so-often during the winter months, when the air is thicker and colder), but it has eliminated my Crohn's Disease symptoms COMPLETELY. Since going vegan, I have not had one stomach-ache, intestinal "flare-up" or any pain - haha, sorry for those details, but it's amazing how much diet really does play a role in one's well-being.

WOW! now that is seriously excellent news.

brava veggie girl! you must feel great!

how long have you been vegan--rather how long did it take until you saw a decrease in symptoms?

also, as a vegan you consume no milk i would think. i wonder: do you think a milk allergy might have been exacerbating both crohn's and the asthma?

as clichè as this sounds - I feel so alive now, not having to worry about stomach-aches or gasping for breath if I don't have an inhaler with me. I have been a vegan since March 2007 - so after only just six months, my health has improved dramatically (and I noticed improvements practically from the start of my "vegan days" - after just 2 or 3 weeks!! not exaggeration!!).

as a vegan, I consume no animal products whatsoever - no meat, fish, poultry, pork, shellfish, or any OTHER animals, for that matter. In addition, I do not consume any dairy products (milk, butter, cream, etcetera), eggs,  or honey.

I forget to mention earlier that I was diagnosed with lactose-intolerance at the age of six; and even when I took lactase-enzymes when eating dairy foods  (obviously this was before becoming vegan), I still had severe stomach-aches; and it made my Crohn's unbearable!! now that I have completely cut dairy out, as well as other hard-to-digest foods (animal products), I am pain-free and much healthier.

My almost ten year old daughter may give you a run for your money on her host of allergies and I know for a fact that cupping her back has saved me many a doctors' visits! I learned to do it while working at a children's hospital in Atlanta back when she had just turned one and got a severe case of bronchitis. That was the last time she had any serious respiratory problems! Of course, she was diagnosised a year and a half later with Systemic Rheumatoid Arthritis, which has come with its own host of problems. But luckily, through it all, she has developed a nice quality of life and I am grateful to know of the cupping the back technique!

My brother, also ten years old, has asthma. Teaching my dad about the cupping the back technique has been a God-send for them!

Keep up with this blog-journey! I'll continue to read them and feel your every laughter, tear-shed, and frustration!

Thank you!

thank you for writing ntc40!

i'm so glad to hear that someone else knows what i'm talking about re: cupping. that lesson was taught to my mother back in the late 70s-early 80s and i havent really heard much about it since.

but i'm even happier to hear cupping has helped your family members with asthma.

isn't it amazing what that cupping technique can do? of course it's usually coupled with prednisone or a z-pack but still, so helpful.

Luckily, my daughter hadn't needed the pulmonary steroids (inhalers) since that bout with bronchitis back in 1998, but she did take oral prednisolone for a long time to control her arthritis. I can't say the same for my brother, but since I taught my dad about the technique and they used it regularly, my brother has had less asthma attacks and less trips to the hospitals. I am grateful!

By the way, my daughter also knows the nurse on a first name basis and I have been raising her to not limit herself because she has allergies and a disability. I do have to say no a lot, but we are also learning what we can say yes to!

yes to yes!

it's taken me a long time to open myself to the possibility of yes and i'm rarely disappointed-it's a great lesson for your child.

thanks for reading!
