A Most Unusual Day

By Sloane Miller, Health Guide Thursday, September 27, 2007
Last Friday I ate dinner at friend's house. They have a dog and I stayed for over two hours. This is the third time in 12 months I have gone to houses where the owners have pets. They have locked them away for a few hours and I've been able to stay longer than 20 minutes before becoming...

I was plagued with allergies as a kid, and had allergy shots 40+ years ago in upstate New York. (Crude by comparison to today's shots, but they worked.)

I moved to California, and for 20 years was blissfully allergy free (except for cats & dogs). When I developed new allergies, I told my Doc that if I was going to take shots, I also wanted to get rid of my allergies to cats and dogs. (I could not spend 10 minutes in a house where cat lived - even if it were not present - without 'turning liquid', and being miserable.)

Fast forward: 7 years later, I own two indoor cats (have for over a year), and NO signs of allergies.

Shots are time consuming, sometimes a little painful, but WELL worth it for me. And all California-environmental allergies are pretty well gone, too.

cynthia!

thanks for writing in and i'm so glad to hear allergy shots helped you. and that you have cats!!! wow they really worked.

unfortunately allergy shots were not great for me. it took over a year for me to get up to the maintainence dose [3x the normal time to get to that point apparently] during which i felt like they made me more sensitive and allergic.

and then during two monthly maintainence shots i had systemic reactions! so i stopped immediately. sigh.

ah well. they have helped many many people. i just am not one of them. so no kitties for me! ;-)
