Primatene Mist - Your Last Inexpensive OTC Inhaler Going Away

By Kathi MacNaughton, Health Pro Thursday, December 08, 2011
Primatene Mist, a stalwart of over the counter asthma inhalers, is heading toward oblivion in a few short weeks. A few years ago, Congress passed a law in the United States, as part of a global initiative to save the environment from harmful chlorofluorocarbons, known as CFCs, which have been shown t...

This sucks.  I don't have the money to go to a doctor and establish a history and have all the tests run to comfirm I have asthma.  I have had it since I was young, and it HAS been confirmed.  The HFA inhalers, I found, did not work as well as the Primatene and that is why I fell back on the old standby.  It's also prescription free.  Hopefully something will come out OTC or the makers of Primatene will figure out how to market it with the "proper" propellant. Sure, the doctors want this OTC to go away...guess who benefits?

I agree with you when I did have  the prescription it didn't work as well as the primatene mist,so I too have it as a BACK UP now that's it's no longer going to be sold I too hope they come out with something else SOON. I though I was the only one that was going through it.

I"m an uninsured  person and have been depending an primatene for all my adult life and for them to discontinue it without making something else available for people with no insurance.is unbelievable.I don't know what I'm going to do, I hope someone comes out with one ,and soon I depend on my asthma medicine. Who wants to be in the EMERGENCY room being treat for asthma everytime you have a attack because you can't go to RiteAid, CVS,etc to get OTC medicine for it...

I'm doubtful that any alternative to Primatene OTC will be coming any time soon. Drugmakers have known for several years now that this day was coming, thanks to the CFC ban. And yet, no action to offer an OTC inhaler that meets the HFA standards.

If you have asthma, I strongly encourage you to talk with a doctor about your options. Untreated asthma can have serious health repercussions.

Best,

Kathi

It doesn't have to be made by primatene it could be another company, as long as it works as good as primatene.Do you remember CVS,Waldgreen, and Riteaid had there own ??? I use to but it from them because it was a cheaper brand than the primatene, all I'm saying is someone should come out with another one for us who are uninsured .

Carla, I hear you. Yes, I do remember the generic versions and had bought them in the past too. But, all I was saying is that everyone has known for years that this day is coming and I've never heard that anyone is planning to produce an OTC version that is HFA compliant. It could happen, but so far, it doesn't seem to be in the works.

I think it would be helpful too for some people, but I just don't see it happening.
