The current system is ruled by insurance companies and drug companies. Whether the patient lives or dies means little to them unless it will affect their bottom line. Drug companies hope to keep a person strung out on their products for as long as possible. Insurance companies very often do better financially if a patient dies sooner rather than later because of the cost associated with prolonging his or her life.
Only recently have insurance companies, under public pressure, begun to encourage some preventative care.
