More Evidence That Eating Healthy Can Equal Better Asthma Control

You probably already know that eating healthy can have many benefits, from keeping weight in a healthy range to a healthier heart to more energy. But did you know that eating healthy may also benefit your breathing? More and more studies are providing strong evidence that making healthy eating choice...

Very glad to read the information in this blog. It is great for a change to read something about how we can relieve asthma symptoms through diet or nutrition. I'd like to suggest another topic to add to this in the future. Please include an article on avoiding food and environmental allergens as a means of asthma relief. My doctor has me avoid foods that I react to and also put me on an rotation diet which has really helped my breathing to improve immeasurably. Also, I had more extensive testing through both the ELISA/ACT and later the Alcat tests that look for delayed allergy symptoms which are not always picked up via rast or IGE testing. It also really helped a great deal.

Thanks for tips on folic acid and vit. D

Thanks for the positive comments. Can you tell me more about the rotation diet? I'm not familiar with that term. And are the foods you're avoiding things you are allergic to? I've read some information on how a gluten-free diet may be beneficial as well, but there don't seem to be enough studies to fully support this.

Thanks again & stay healthy,

Kathi

As a lay-person, I'll try to explain it as best as I can. But will also share two web sites of places that tested me for delayed sensitivity reaction and helped establish the added foods that needed to be avoided.

The rotation diet does consist of avoiding foods that you have an allergic reaction to both from the traditional sensitivities testing and the delayed. You are then put on a diet that allows you to eat the foods that tested for no reaction. It is recommended to eat different non-reactive foods each day and not eat the same food for until the 5th day. In other words; you can eat apples. So on Monday you eat apples. You skip three days and then on Friday, you can have apples again. The rotation diet keeps your body from creating any senstivities to these non-reactive foods and while avoiding the reactive foods, you can give your immune system a break and allow it to build itself up. In some cases people have experienced a variety of symptom relief from not only allergies but other immune related conditions. In some cases, people can eventually start introducing some of the reactive foods in their diet as they now can become non-reactive.

Gluten is indeed a common problem, but not for all people. That is why testing is needed and the delayed sensitivity testing is a good compliment as this is now a proven method for finding that people can have a delayed sensitivity response that can come hours or even days later. These sites can also test for non-food reactions to molds, chemicals, food additives, etc. For example, carob was one of the things I reacted to severely. These sites will give you a list of all the derivatives of carob which can come in all sorts of capsules and food thickeners. I also had reactions to common things in water like chlorine and a severe one to flouride. So, have to filter that out.

I can tell you that after two years on this diet, my copd has improved radically and has allowed me to get off of oxygen and eventually a signficant reduction in medication. But, I can detect problems if I go off the diet or if I'm around environmental offenders for very long. This is my own personal experience and I am in no way advocating for any company or philosophy. Am just a person looking to improve my health.

Here are two of the companies that do this work. There is another, but I forget the name.
