Bronchial Thermoplasty - An Effective Alternative Asthma Therapy

By Kathi MacNaughton, Health Pro Monday, January 25, 2010
If you're anything like me, you love the idea of treating your asthma with anything other than pumping a foreign chemical into your body. You'd love something more "natural", right? I have good news... there is a new alternative therapy for asthma on the horizon and it's called bronchial thermoplasty...

I have read about another device, namely, one called a Flutter Valve which  works by vibration.  I have asthma for a number of years but for the last couple of years I have had an excess of mucus which sits in my lungs and needs to be cleared regularly.  This is partly caused by a post nasal drip but it seems this device is helpful in loosening phlegm.  Have you heard of this and do you know where  I could purchase it.  Do I need a prescription to buy it?  Thanks for your help. I've never heard of that Josefina... You could research on the Web to see what you could learn... or just ask your doctor about it. I'm quite sure it would need an Rx.

The flutter valve is solely designed to mobilize mucus. This does nothing for airway constriction. Also, for the flutter to be effective you must have a good strong cough.

You need to ask a pulmonologist about acquiring the flutter valve. There are other similar products out there as well. One of them is called an Acapella

I have used the Acapella "flutter valve" for my severe asthma when I have been sick and very congested. You do need a prescription to get one, your local DME company can get one for you. It is used for the clearance of mucus. I worked in the hospital for 27 years as a respiratory therapist as I was looking for alternatives that might work for me. I have severe asthma and it has helped me. Good luck.

How do you find a Doctor that is preforming that procedure?

Well... I think you could try Googling for that term  + your city/town and see what comes up. You could also call your local Lung Association office (or local hospital) and see if they can make a referral.
