Mild Asthma... When to Treat?

I have been told by docs that I have a mild form of asthma that kicks in when I engage in too much cardiovascular activity. I don't want that to be an excuse for not exercising rigorously, but it doesn't seem to be severe enough for me to get a doc-prescribed inhaler.
