If you have ever looked at the ingredients on a box of toothpaste you'll see list of about 200+ things, some people have sensitivities or allergies to one or more of these items. If this is not the case for you, you could be gagging yourslef as you brush, causing you to cough. Try to focus on your breathing (easier said then done I know) but if you are breathing you can not gag, just be sure to breath through your nose and not your mouth as you brush, see if that helps, if not, talk with your dentist about the most common allergies or sensitivites and see if they can recommend you a toothpaste to try.
