Q: Using patches and smoking for the last 2yrs

I have been wearng nicoderm cq patches and smoking 2-3cigarettes per day for the past two years. A couple of days ago I quit smoking and continued wearing the patches.  I have worn them 24/7 for the entire two years.  I have experienced horrible panick attacks and was hospitalized for low potassium a couple of weeks ago.  Could this be related and what should i do from here?

Hi Bob,

Congratulations for quitting smoking! That is an incredibly difficult thing to do. Because you were wearing the patches and smoking at the same time, it is possible you were getting an overdose of nocotine and now that you are no longer smoking you are experiencing a little withdrawal. There is a new site here at Health Central just for people like you who either quit or are trying to quit. The site is www.stopsmokingconnection.com

There you can read about the basics of what it's like to stop smoking. How it affects your body and what you can do to help get over the difficulties like withdrawal. Also some great resources and information here.

I hope this helps. If you continue to have difficulty with panic attacks and other issues it might be best to see your doctor. While online resources are great for getting information, they can not take the place of your doctor's solid medical advice.

Good luck and stay in touch! Let us know how you are doing!
