Hi Missy Attitude,

I'm sorry to hear you've been having so many troubles with your daughter's health. I'm sure it's frustrating to see her so sick. This page from a pediatrician offers a lot of info about when to do allergy testing in kids:

http://pediatrics.about.com/od/weeklyquestion/a/0906_alrgy_test.htm

If your current healthcare professional is unwilling to work with you to your satisfaction, you DO have the right to get a second opinion. Every person with asthma or allergies should be able to achieve control, so if that's not happening with your daughter, I'd say some kind of change in strategy is in order.

Challenge testing is probably what they are encouraging you to do in terms of the food allergies. It can be a viable strategy, where you offer small amounts of a specific food type to try and pinpoint sensitivities, but it can also be dangerous, as it could set off an allergic shock (anaphylaxis) reaction. So you'd only want to do this under supervision.

Just remember, as your child's advocate you have both the right and responsibility to get health care that helps her.

My son is 4 and is a severe asthmatic. Our family has found that a allergy test (scratch test in his case) was very helpful. We have an allergist, pulmonolist(asthma doctor), peditrican, and a Ear Nose and Throat doctor. All of them have had something helpful to offer my son. However I found the peditrican to be the most unhelpful. She is a wonderful doctor but is a generalist in the field of asthma and allergy with only basic knowledge, and often misdiagnosed and/or gave insuffient medication. We made 4 emergency rooms visits before we finally recieved the asthma diagnosis from her. My opinion, stick with the specialists, the pulmonolist, allergist, and ENT. I am not an expert. I'm just a worried mom of a child with asthma.  I'm so sorry you and your daughter are forced to spend to much time indoors. We've been there and it's difinitely no way to live. My prayers are with you.
