Does Accolade have any withdrawal consequences?
I am a 68 year old female-I developed asthma after being put on prednisone for pneumonia when I was 45 years of age. After 15 years, a lung specialist found that prednisone was actually the cause of my severe swelling of the throat and difficulty breathing. He weaned me off the prednisone in about a year and I quit having the throat swelling shut incidents, but still had exercise induced asthma, was put on Accolade and Advair-almost 10 years now. Recently I have dbeen diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, and during a prolonged attack I had to stop eating and could not keep the Accolade down-a welcome outcome was that my peak flows went up and breathing was much better. After a couple of weeks off, I tried it again. Peak flows down. So stopped taking it, but after learning about Churg-Strauss syndrome, am concerned about withdrawing from the Accolate. I am still taking the Advair.
Hi Jean,
This was an interesting question and case study you present. Perhaps one of the doctor experts here will chime in, but I did do a little research on this. The Accolate (not Accolade) prescribing materials do not specify any withdrawal symptoms for stopping Accolate. But, as with any asthma medicine, a sudden stopping or reduction of the dose could have adverse effects simply from loss of asthma control.
However, you seem to be having the opposite effect, which is intriguing, as your asthma seems to be getting better when off the Accolate. Your comment about Accolate and Churg Strauss syndrome got me researching too. I found an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association that indicated there is some suspicion of Accolate causing Churg Strauss syndrome in some people, but that has not been definitely proved at this point.
So I don't really have any answers for you, but I would encourage you strongly to bring these questions to your own doctor. And if you can't get answers, then you have the right to seek a second opinion. You owe it to yourself to advocate for your own good health.
Good luck!
