Q: can advair cause blackouts?

my name is starr. i'm barely 15 and i was diagnosed with asthma about 4 years ago while infected with pneumonia. ever since i've been using advair. most recently i was in church on a sunday morning around 9 and i felt my lungs kind of closing up. then everything started to get black and that was all i remembered. when i came back to consiousness my dad told me i hit my head hard yet i could remember nothing of the sort. after telling my great grandmother the scene i caused in church she advised me on some information she came up on recently. that advair has side effects like rashes and mood swings and maybe even blackouts. i have not yet found any specific information on the blackout part but more than enough on the rashes and mood swimgs which i dont have. and yet there was no reason for a blackout for me. my blood sugar was completely normal and i wasnt hungry. my heart beat was fine and even though i hit my head there was no concussion. does anybody have a logical explanation for this to have occured? im open to any answers as of right now.Smile anyne who can provide one will be greatly appreciated!

Hi Starr,

Loss of consciousness is definitely not one of the reported side effects from Advair. However, drugs can act differently on different people, so it's not impossible, just unlikely.

More important, though, is the fact that dizziness/fainting can be caused by many different things. So I would encourage you to contact your doctor, if you haven't already, to be evaluated for this problem. You want to be sure you do all you can to prevent it from happening again, as next time your injuries could be more severe.

Also, you should never stop taking asthma medicine, despite your concerns about side effects, without talking with your doctor first. That's because the dangers from uncontrolled asthma can be far worse than any medicine side effects. Still, if you are interested in reading more about the safety of Advair, check out this article by our expert, Dr. Thompson.

To your health,

Kathi
