Hi Crystal,   Having an asthma attack at home without an available rescue inhaler can be quite distressing and dangerous. The first thing to do is remain calm. Getting help from another member of the household is the next step. They may be able to assist you in finding your inhaler. If you are very uncomfortable because of the asthma attack, you should call, or have someone call 911.   Some signs of severe asthma include:   -Not being able to speak in full sentences because of shortness of breath   -Profuse sweating associated with labored breathing   -Rapid breathing   -Color changes of the skin or nail beds (pale or blue)   -A drop in the peak flow rate to 50% or less of you personal best   It is important to be prepared for an asthma attack by having an action plan. Steps should be taken to prevent attacks. Keep your rescue inhaler in a specific place at home when you are not carrying it with you. Have your doctor's phone number posted for easy access.   Good Luck,   J. Thompson, MD
