Monday, August 24, 2009 gale asks

Q: I've been using Intal inhaler for many years with great success and am worried about not having it.

I'm hypersensitive to newer anti-inflammatories such as Flovent/Advair. I end up with respiratory infections due to the dryness that results. I believe I've tried most of them.

I also use theophylline once a day and Maxaire. I formerly used Azmacort but had to stop due its drying effects. I have an unusual sensitivity to these meds and instead have had to rely on a small amount of prednisone once a week to control inflammation. With Intal, that has worked. What about Atrovent? Is that a possibility? OTher suggestions? Thanks!

This seems to be a popular question of late.  A good alternative is Tilade.  You an read about it by clicking on this link.

Thanks for your reply. Tilade was discontinued last year (King Pharmaceuticals) in the U.S. but it appears as if it might be available for order online from European pharmacies without an RX. I'm not sure if that's current info, though. Also very expensive.

You are correct.  It is available for order online at a number of Canadian pharmacies, but you do need a Rx from your MD.

I would like more information about getting Intal from a Canadian pharmacy - I spoke to a Canadian pharmacist & was told Intal was not available there either.

hi,

for some reason I cannot see your whole question but,

from what I understand they are discontinuing intal I know the manufacturer ran out when I went to refill my script. and as for you taking theophylline I took it for 30+ years and my Dr took me off of it because he said they try not to use it anymore because of the side effects and what it does to the body(can stunt growth and so on) I was experiencing sores on my head that would cause bald spots from theophylline once I stopped taking it they went away and my hair grew back in the bald spots if you asthma is too bad I would tell your dr all the problems you are having and maybe you can find somthing that works through trial and error. a change in diet can sometimes help. have you ever been tested for allergies? or a heart problem? I have heart problems and for a few years thought it was my asthma . anyway a lot of the new meds have side effects and causing respiratory infections can be one of them if you are getting dried out try a humidifier that might help some( an allergy/asthma specialist could really help you on some of this) if you have any questions just ask me and I will help  as much as I can

have you tried symbicort? it has a steroid in it as well and might help using prednisone that often is not good for you(I went through the prednisone route)
