Dear Singingbee:   Contrary to popular belief, asthma is not just a childhood thing. You do not have to have experienced asthma as a child to be diagnosed with asthma as an adult. I was 27 years old when diagnosed with asthma, by mother was 50 years old when she received her asthma diagnosis.   Therories behind why one might develop asthma are numerous. Some feel it is environmental while others feel it has to do with the foods we eat or the other conditions we have. One thing that must also be considered is the method and accuracy of diagnosis impacts how and how often asthma is diagnosed.   If you are having symptoms that make you concerned - asthma related or not - ask your doctor. If you have already been told that yoiu have asthma, do all you can to educate yourself about asthma. Asthma is controllable - it does not have to control your life. Ask questions of your doctor and request a consultation with a certified asthma educator (AE-C) to get in control of your asthma.   Breathe Easy!   Gerri Rivers, AE-C
