Thursday, December 18, 2008 John asks

Q: I have a tight chest, cough when eating cereals or bread, feel slightly light-headed. Asthma?

I am 60 years old and have developed a tendency to cough when eating dry foods (breakfast cereal, bread etc).  It feels almost as though the food is 'going down the wrong way'.  Sometimes the cough is slightly phlegmy.  My chest often feels tight and I become out of breath quite easily.  I quite often feel light-headed and am perpetually tired.  The last may be a result of taking pretty high-level pain-killers for arthritis.

Could the above be asthma or do the symptoms indicate something else please?

Hi John,

Coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath can all be symptoms of asthma. And the fact that this happens when you're eating grains could be an indication of allergic asthma, as the other answerer has suggested.

But there's really no way anyone here can tell you that for sure. These symptoms could also be due to any number of other illnesses or issues. So I would strongly suggest you talk with your doctor about how you've been feeling. Meawhile, keep a detailed journal of when the symptoms occur and how they feel to help the doctor.

Good luck!

Kathi
