The best way to take care of your new HFA type inhaler is to not wait until it is clogged. Rinsing the canister tip and the plastic actuator for 30 seconds under warm water every day is the best preventive measure you can take. Also, prime the inhaler according to the instructions that come with it. HFA inhalers need to be primed more than the old CFC type.

That's a great question Allison, and one that a lot of people are going to be asking (if they aren't already) as we transition completely from the old inhalers to the new HFA inhalers by Dec. 31, 2008.

Kathi answered the question very well. If you need any more help, you may want to ask your pharmacist for tips about your specific HFA inhaler (because they're all different).

You may also want to read a post from Romelia Rodriguez Walters all about the transition and managing the new the HFA inhalers --

I clean my inhaler by "attaching" it to the faucet and letting HOT water run through it for a few minutes.... Don't boil it.. I have tried that and it melted!  The hot water really works.. and you will be able to tell because the measured amount comes out much more briskly, but if you use it to soon after rinsing, you'll get a little water back with the spray!Cool
