You will probably have to use it forever if it helps your breathing unless a new medication is found that will work better. I have COPD and asthma and know how well it keep me from flare ups. I am resigned to the fact that I will use medications forever. It sure beats the alternatives; suffering to breathe or flare ups. I also work hard to avoid people with colds because I always get bronchitis or pneumonia not a common cold.
