Can You Help Me Control My Asthma?
Over the past couple years my asthma was controlled fine, maybe getting an attack once a year or so but ever since my brother move back into my apartment with me and my mom it's been worse. It started monthly, then weekly and finally is deteriorated into nightly attacks everyday and I don't know what to do? I take my albuterol and my other meds but their not helping. My brother smokes, *(though not in the house and gets extremely violent when asked to stop)*, and it ain't the legal either. Also because I live in the Caribbean it's hard to determine what causing my attacks. Please help because two pumps of the albuterol are no longer working and I am afraid about what's going to happen to me if it's not controlled.
Barring that there are no other environmental changes in your life other than your brother moving in with you and smoking, I would recommend (however hard this might be to hear), that you have your brother move out of your house. If he is smoking the illegal stuff, that would make it even worse for your asthma than regular smoke.
Aside from what I just wrote, I would highly recommend that you talk to your doctor and discuss your concerns with him or her. Considering your asthma was controlled for the past "couple years", it would appear that something NEW is upsetting your asthma. Is it your brother's smoke, or is it something else? You definitely should be discussing this with your doctor.
Even if you cannot get rid of the things that irritate your asthma, you should discuss this situation with your doctor, because he or she MAY be able to change your medication regime to help you get your asthma under control.

Hi LadyAngel,
Thank you for your question! I have to agree with the above message, that the best answer may be to remove your brother from the situation. Even if you can have him leave for a week, just to see if your asthma gets better, that will help you to determine whether that is the actual cause of your worsening asthma. That being said, you should not have to use your albuterol every day. Albuterol is a "rescue inhaler." If it's being used more than twice a week, you should have a "preventive inhaler" that you take regularly to prevent asthma attacks. I would recommend that you talk to your doctor and ask about getting a maintenance inhaler, which should help to keep your airways clear most of the time. Then if things get extra bad, you'll still have your albuterol to provide relief. I hope this helps.
Best of luck,
Casey

Have you by any chance tried a diet to control it? I have put my 6 year old on a strict MSG Free diet, and it has all but eliminated it. He is now off all medications, except for emergency inhaler which he hasn't had to use in over 8 months now.
