Q: What prescription cough medicine will really suppress my cough at night.

I take one with codeine and I still wake up coughing? Is there a better one. I have a biopsy coming up and I'm not supposed to move.

This is a question best asked of your doctor who knows you and who has the power to prescribe something. There are various choices, so if what you're taking isn't working, there's probably something else that will.

You don't say if you have asthma, but since you're on this site, I'm assuming maybe you do. If so, coughing is often a symptom that asthma is out of control. So another thing to look at is your asthma treatment. Are you taking your daily/twice daily inhaled steroid as prescribed? Would using your rescue inhaler calm your coughing (it does mine often)? Are there changes you could make in your environment to reduce exposure to your asthma triggers? (such as keeping the dog out of your bedroom or washing linens and blankets in hot water to get rid of dust mites)

Yes I have cough variant asthma. Its pretty well under control unless I get a respiratory virus or bacteria. I do my inhaler once a day and increase it when I get a cough. The rescue inhaler only works sometimes. The only pet we have is a guinea pig and its downstairs when I'm sleeping. I probably should wash my linens more!!

At least I got thru the biopsy! Just waiting for results

I'm not a medical professional, so speak with your doctor about this before you do anything.

I'd say you should consider getting allergy testing, and if you do have allergies to household stuff, start washing your bedding regularly, vacuuming often, etc, and if you're still uncontrolled, you might want to talk to your doctor about Singulair or other leukotriene receptor agonists, as well as starting antihistamines (both of which help me with my allergic asthma).
