Q: Is there a coalition which could help in any way?

I have asthma and have no job, no insurance.  I have been very ill with it lately.  Is there a coalition that could help in anyway? I just started using nasonex and Symbicort which someone has given to me without it.  I would not know what to do.  I have been on numerous meds since I have had asthma.  Right now I do not even know what most of them were.  My soon to be ex's insurance will not cover me since I live in Illinois and he in Missouri.  I really am grasping at straws here.  Until I can get a job with insurance if there is someway out there that I could get the help I need it would be greatly appreciated.  Thank You

Hi Susan,

Having asthma is rough when you don't have health insurance. I know, because I'm in the same boat. Asthma medicine is expensive, even more so now with the HFA inhalers. I spend over $100/month on my inhalers, and I don't take them as often as prescribed. Luckily, I  only have mild asthma.

For you, my best advice is to get examined by a doctor as soon as possible. You might try going to an urgent care clinic. That's what I did when I first realized I couldn't just do without asthma medication. The clinic I went to charged my around $75 for an appointment and they told me I couldn't keep coming there for asthma, but they did give me a couple prescriptions to get me started and back under control.

So, you might think about that. Alternatively, you could check with your local health department to see if they have any respiratory care clinics, where care is free or greatly reduced.

Pharmaceutical companies also offer discounts and freebies. In most cases, though, you'll need to at least nominally be under the care of a physician. You can learn more about your options here.

To your health,

Kathi

I think trying to go to a walk in clinic for low income individuals is a good idea. Sometimes there are no co-pays. I live in Portland,Or and there is one called Outside In and they take anyone at no cost. However, there are always long waits. As for gettting the drugs, this can be acomplished by patient assistance programs or online sources. Try www.progressiverx.com to see if they have a discount. Sometimes it can save alot of money. Best of luck.
