Q: Magnseium for asthmatics?

I have been  an asthmatic fo over 40 years.  I have tried multiple medications, some helping, some not.  I am on numerous medications now just to keep at a sub-par level ( at least how I view it ).  Recently my doctor added magnesium 400mg twice daily to my cocktail.  The only problem I am very tired !  I stress very, sleeping at frequent intervals during the day, is this unusual?  I know when I recieve IV Magnesium, I get quite tired.  There are not many more alternatives for me, and this seems to help a little.  I have basically been trapped in my house for the last 6 weeks because of pollen, humidity, heat and rain.  I know mag is a smooth muscle relaxant, is this why?  Any ideas?  Thanks bunches !

I am no healthcare practitioner so take this with a grain of salt and do follow up with your own research if you can. Magnesium is a great supplement to take not only for your lungs but for your heart. A few doctors have told me that magnesium can in part act as a bronchodilator. I take 400-800mg a day and make sure that I take a good vitamin supplement as well in order to balance out the other minerals that are good with magnesium like calcium and potassium. It helps me quite alot with asthma congestion and my heart function. I found that the liquid form is easier to tolerate as supplements can make your bowel movements a little loose. An iv would be a great way to get magnesium. As to why you are getting tired; I can only guess. And you would be best to check with your doctor. As they prescribed it they must be open and aware of nutritional therapy and might have an idea of what is going on. I wonder if it could be some sort of detoxing going on or that the magnesium might be a relaxant of sorts for you and at this time your body needs some rest? You might also think about getting a blood test like an RBC to see what minerals you are absorbing or might be deficient in. Hope this is helpful.

I have been an asthmatic all my life and I take calcium/magnesium combination because of lactose intolerance.  I've never knows it to be a muscle relaxer but it is suppose to be calming to the nerves.  I do sleep better.

Sometimes too much stress can bring on an asthma attack so I would say yes.  There may be a tendency to be more tired.  Tell your doctor and maybe he will cut it back a little.
