Hi Amanda,
Your concern for your child's well being is certainly valid. However, your question didn't indicate whether or not your child has asthma. An opened window is not a cause for asthma; however, there may be some outdoor environmental allergens, "asthma triggers", that need to be considered. Something that causes asthma symptoms to start is considered an asthma trigger. Cold air itself is a known trigger for asthma. Other outdoor triggers to consider are smoke, vehicle exhaust, dust, to name a few. If your child does have asthma, it is important to determine what exactly causes his/her asthma to start up. Identifying asthma triggers is a key step to gaining control of asthma and eliminating the possibility of asthma episodes. So, before you decide to close the window or leave it ajar, find out first if one action or the other causes your child to have asthma symptoms. It really is a question of comfort if your child does not have asthma.
