is it possible to exibit asthma after quiting smoking?

my father just quit smoking in almost a year now and all of a sudden he exibits asthma..his weaght decress and im worried if its more than asthma..but the doctor said it is asthma...hope you can help me and help me understand my fathers situition..thank you so much
